Infrared Sauna
How It Works
Infrared sauna therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to gently heat the body from the inside out, rather than heating the air around you like a traditional sauna. This allows for a deeper, more efficient thermal response at lower ambient temperatures, typically ranging from 110–165°F, making sessions more comfortable while still producing a profound physiological effect.
Infrared light falls just outside the visible spectrum and is divided into near-infrared (NIR), mid-infrared (MIR), and far-infrared (FIR) wavelengths. Each penetrates the body at different depths:
Near-infrared: Supports skin health, mitochondrial function, and cellular repair
Mid-infrared: Reaches soft tissues and muscles, supporting circulation and recovery
Far-infrared: Promotes deep sweating and detoxification processes
Unlike traditional heat exposure that warms the surrounding air, infrared energy penetrates tissue directly, increasing core body temperature and stimulating systemic responses at the cellular level.
The Science Behind the Benefits
1. Cardiovascular Conditioning
Infrared sauna use has been shown to elevate heart rate and increase cardiac output in a manner similar to moderate exercise. Studies on repeated heat exposure demonstrate improvements in endothelial function, circulation, and blood pressure regulation. This effect is sometimes referred to as “passive cardiovascular training.”
2. Detoxification Through Deep Sweating
As core temperature rises, the body initiates thermoregulation through sweating. Research suggests that sweat may contain trace amounts of heavy metals and environmental toxins. While the body’s primary detox pathways are hepatic and renal, heat-induced sweating can serve as an adjunct elimination pathway.
3. Mitochondrial Support
Infrared exposure — particularly near-infrared wavelengths — has been associated with stimulation of cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria. This can enhance ATP production, supporting cellular energy, tissue repair, and metabolic efficiency.
4. Reduced Inflammation & Recovery
Heat therapy increases circulation and oxygen delivery to tissues while modulating inflammatory markers. Repeated sauna use has been associated with lower levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and improved muscle recovery.
5. Stress Reduction & Autonomic Balance
Infrared heat activates the parasympathetic nervous system following the thermal stress response. This can improve relaxation, reduce cortisol levels, and support improved sleep quality.
6. Longevity & Disease Risk Reduction
Large population studies on regular sauna use show associations with reduced cardiovascular mortality, improved cognitive resilience, and decreased risk of neurodegenerative conditions. While most long-term data is based on traditional sauna use, similar thermoregulatory benefits apply to infrared modalities.
